Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) was established in 1823 as the École de Médecine de Pondichéry by the French Government and was renamed Dhanvantari Medical College in 1956.

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) was established in 1823 as the École de Médecine de Pondichéry by the French Government and was renamed Dhanvantari Medical College in 1956. It shifted to its present campus in 1964 and now spans 192.2 acres. On 14 July 2008, JIPMER was declared an Institution of National Importance and became autonomous under an Act of Parliament.

JIPMER is renowned for its undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty medical education and research. It offers MBBS (243 seats/year), MD/MS in 23 disciplines, DM and MCh programmes, PhD, fellowship courses, and nursing, allied health sciences, and public health programmes.

With over 40 clinical departments, 2,059 hospital beds, and advanced facilities including super-specialty, emergency, women and children, and cancer care blocks, JIPMER provides high-quality healthcare mainly to economically weaker sections.

JIPMER has strong research infrastructure, a well-equipped central library, hostel facilities for students, active rural and urban outreach centres, and a workforce of about 5,000 staff. It aims to be a model health system in India through excellence in education, research, patient care, and innovation.
